We’re fast approaching 2025 and a fresh start. Resolutions, gym memberships, dry January, vegan-uary etc etc etc. We love the newness that January brings don’t we? It’s an invitation to try to do things differently, to shake things up. Well for those of us who have experienced or are experiencing fertility challenges, grief or childlessness, new year can be a complex time. Come January, you may have tiptoed through a minefield of festive triggers. You may be glad to wave goodbye to a tough year. You may be disappointed to be chalking up another year on your journey. You may be hopeful for what 2025 could bring. So many complex and conflicting feelings, each of them valid.
How about work ? What does 2025 look like for you career-wise and what will the year take you closer to in the longer term? I often talk about how fertility challenges can leave you feeling totally stuck at work. For all manner of reasons. Sometimes it’s dented confidence, sometimes overwhelm. Sometimes you’re just not that engaged anymore and sometimes you don’t have the headspace to think about career as well as all the hard stuff you’re dealing with at home. When it feels like the gears have been grinding and stalling in your career for a while, you might be considering how you can get things moving smoothly again when everything feels so hard. Could January be a good time to set some career goals?
Only if they’re authentic goals.
I actually don’t do new years resolutions myself. There’s something about the external pressure to make a positive change that pokes my rebellious side. Aside from anything, they never stick so I figure what’s the point? If making a change just because it’s January is not an authentic enough reason to stick it out, me personally – I don’t bother. I prefer to see every day as an opportunity for a fresh start and setting authentic goals works better for me than resolutions. So OK yes January is as good a time as any to set career goals, but I vote make them authentic and unlike those flimsy resolutions, make them goals you intend to achieve. When your goals honour the tough, emotional, sad, frustrating, shitty fertility journey you’re on, you’re more likely to achieve them. So set goals that take you toward a purposeful and happy place professionally whilst sensitively protecting your heart and wellbeing. When you’re carrying a heavy load outside of work, performance and goal setting processes in the workplace can feel tediously inauthentic. Let me help you set some decent goals that you can feel passionate about.
Masterclass Coming
I love a good masterclass and I haven’t done one in a little while so my Christmas gift to you is a new session all about goal setting, Career Plus Fertility: Goal Setting When Everything Feels Hard. I did try to come up with a snappier title but it isn’t easy to set goals when everything feels hard so what else could I call the session really? We’ll get Christmas out of the way and ease into the new year gently, then join me on 20th Jan, 15:30 – 16:15 to set some career goals. You’ll identify goals that will give you confidence, focus and purpose in your career whilst honouring the reality of your situation. Register here to secure your spot. Not available? Register anyway to receive the replay. Know someone who would find the session helpful? Forward them this email, everyone is welcome!
